Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, increasing tensions between the two countries following US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.
"He runs narcotics facilities and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.
Rising Threats and Claims
Speaking to the press over the weekend, the American leader threatened analogous use of force towards the South American nation, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and “run by a problematic figure who enjoys creating narcotics and selling it to the United States."
Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.
A Deteriorating Partnership
This nation was historically a key ally of the United States in the campaign against drug trafficking and enjoyed bipartisan support from American politicians, but relations have soured significantly after Trump assumed the presidency.
Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.
Colombia's Firm Response
When asked if a military operation similar to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good from my perspective."
Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he stated.
"The US president speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he posted in a post.
"If US bombs target peasants, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain me, which many of the population loves and respects, they will release the fierce spirit of the nation," Petro warned.
From Insurgent to President
Petro spent a period in his early life as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he took part in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the nation's highest office.
"I made a vow to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he affirmed.
Heightened Measures along with Broad Condemnation
Colombia's defense chief announced that the president’s personal security had received additional support.
Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, but voices spanning Colombian politics have rejected the notion of an invasion against their nation.
Political and Financial Sanctions
American authorities withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he urged US troops to disobey unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, his spouse and a number of associates.
Simultaneously the US was building up its forces in the region and bombing vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted attacks on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
