New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
