The artist has given the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to save the Britain's grassroots music venues.

He was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his third album his work was declared the best record of the last 12 months.

He has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the performances I did around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have permanently closed – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also took part, raising over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds assisted venues that were confronting possible closure due to challenges caused by water damage, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in big venues backs the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked singer the singer. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had rescued two local spots in the South East, by bringing them into local control.
